So, I am putting out my cat through the sun-room door and I look up to see a young male deer about 10 feet away from me. The juvenile buck pauses long enough to look at me and then keeps eating the dead plants in my neighbor’s flower bed. Roswell seems un-afraid of the deer and runs out the door. The buck sees her and goes into defense mode, stamping the ground with his front paws and emitting low snorts.
As Roswell walks out the side yard to the front of the house the buck follows her, pausing a few times to perform his stomp-and-snort routine—He alternates from one paw to the other when he stomps the ground. I guess Roswell finally gets spooked by the deer as she runs under the sun-room. The deer spends 10 minutes more in the neighbor’s yard eating in the flower beds before wandering off. Below are some pics of the deer in the front and side yard of my Mom’s house in Syracuse.
I checked the web and antlers that small this late in the year means
this deer is a yearling. The little antler nubs are called “spikes”.
The antlers will begin their first full growth cycle next Spring.
He nosed around the bird-feeder but it has been empty for a while now.
So, he noshed on all the dead plants in the flower bed. (nom, nom, nom)
